What photography gear do you use?

I shoot with a set of Sony Full-Frame bodies and lenses. I currently use the Sony A7R III body. My two favorite lenses are the Sony 16-35mm F4 and  Sony 70-200mm F4. I also do aerial photography sometimes with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Check out a list of all my gear and equipment here.

What camera would you recommend for a beginner?
You’ve come to the right place! The perfect camera for beginners is the Sony a6000. The reason is simple: it’s budget friendly (< $400), you can change lenses, and it has all the custom settings and functions that even the most demanding of photographers would need. Basically it’s the perfect entry into photography but also a great camera as you improve and grow your photography skills. It won’t break the bank to get started and you’ll be able to collect and improve your lens collection as you please.

Check out my post on the PERFECT entry-level camera for landscape and travel photography.

If you’re dead set on photography and want to spend a bit more, I would highly recommend the full frame Sony A7 III. This is probably the best full frame out there (along with its higher resolution big brother, the A7R IV). The lenses are top notch as well, just be prepared to spend!

What is your most important piece of photography gear?
If you have nothing at all, the camera is the most important. But assuming you have a camera, then hands down my most critical piece of gear is my tripod. I never go anywhere without it. It’s big, bulky, and heavy but is such a big part of my photography. A tripod lets you get crisp, sharp photos even in low light, long exposures, night shots, the list goes on. I always have it with me and pretty much take all of my photos with it.

I use a Gitzo GT2545T. Read about all my gear here.

What do you use for post-processing / photo editing?

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. For stars/astro I use Sequator to stack multiple exposures.
